Financial Aid: Welfare for Students

Yesterday Vice President Dick Cheney rushed back from the Middle East to cast the tie-breaking vote on a budget that cut Financial Aide to students. This is a good first step but it would be even better to cut all Financial Aid entirely. Essentially, Financial Aid is welfare for students. Many students spend years in school living off government handouts refusing to get a job. I have even heard stories of Financial Aid Queens who ride up to Financial Aid offices in limousines to collect their checks. And what do these students learn while they're living off of taxpayers' hard-earned money? Most are indoctrinated into far left-wing ideologies. Universities are factories for turning students into liberals. According to polls the overwhelming majority of college professors are liberal. In fact, the better educated you are, the more likely you are to be liberal. What does that tell you? I did a random sampling of universities and discovered that while almost all of them promise a "liberal arts" education not a single one taught "conservative arts." It's time we stopped funding universities until they have proven themselves more fair and balanced and force these lazy students to get a job.

i think your idea of 'financial aid being welfare' is completely and utterly so far out there it isn't even funny. just because there are a few people out there who live off the system DOESN'T mean we all do. myself for example i work 32 hours a week, hold a full time schedule @ school and on top of that all also use the work study option through financial aid which in case you haven't researched this enough that means that i WORK for my grants. without financial aid there would be way less people choosing to continue their education, so basically then what you are saying is that it's ok for the future generations to just get a job at minimum wage and not ever excel to their full potential in life, i'm so disgusted by the fact that you think it should be taken away i don't even know what to think. we don't all have the support of our parents to better ourselves so i feel that if people want to better themselves and they need the help of the government we should damn well get it after all if politicians can draw over 7 million in pensions while they don't pay one red cent us students should be able to use some of the governments money to better ourselves!!

I am not certain if this is sarcasim or empty-headed babble. I'll respond to it in the later context. The NCES states that 63% of all students recieve finacial aid. Without it we would lose ove half of our countrys students. Along with it the educational intitutions would lose there means of finance. The United States continues to fall behind most first world countrys when it comes to its populations educated work force. Opinions like this are not even conservitive. There are the results of the internet being a place for free speech; the unfortunate side effect being that positions can be stated with no regard to fact. Most of all finacial aid most be paid back. Also all students on finacial aid must demenstrate appropriate progress or they lose it. This includes maintaining an appropriate grade point average and taking on a required class load. The author should think about how they feel next time they need medical attention, perhaps the doctor got where they were by finacial aid. Any service that the author enjoys or needs is probaly being provided by the very institution that they are trying to stop. By stating that students on finacial aid are lazy this writer proved that they are too lazy to research the facts. I would continue but im sure the point will be missed as the ignorant are that way because they refuse to listen. So instead i will finish my coffee and take a shower to rid myself of the smell of smoke. I just got off a 24 hour shift at the firestation, a position i hold because of a degree i recieved on finacial aid. Afterwords i will take a nap and leave to take care of my lawn care accounts i maintain in the summer to pay back the finacial aid i recieved.

to the person who made the statements about taking away finacial aide, how about your parents take away your funds and lets see where you end up in life . my point is everyone needs a little help in life who knows your parents might not be where they are today if they did not have some kind of help which means you would be on the system also , remeber every thing is a chain reaction!!!!!

I just had to comment on the irony of "In fact, the better educated you are, the more likely you are to be liberal. What does that tell you?" What it tells me is that die hard conservatives like your self just aren't educated enough to understand something as complicated as student aid.

What Jon's statement tells me is that despite Jon's laudable commitment to reasonable conservatism, we must, for the sake of both honesty and reasonableness, inform Jon that there is a city called "Detroit.

It is a city wherein nearly half of the population is judged functionally illiterate.

"In the state of Michigan, 18 percent of adults, nearly one in five, were functionally illiterate. Detroit had the one of the highest illiteracy rates in the country, with 47 percent of its residents, nearly one out of two, scoring at Level I in the NIL survey."

http://www.wsws.org/news/1998/oct1998/ill-o14.shtml

It is also apparently the most politically liberal city in America:

" NEW STUDY RANKS AMERICA’S MOST LIBERAL AND CONSERVATIVE CITIES

Detroit tops liberal list; Provo, UT most conservative

BERKELEY, CA – A new nationwide study released today by the nonpartisan Bay Area Center for Voting Research (BACVR) ranks the political leanings of every American city and finds that Detroit, Michigan is the most liberal and Provo, Utah the most conservative.

What does that tell you about your suspected connection between education and liberalism, Jon?

Wow..so the more educated people are liberals? I guess that makes you a moron. You sure sound like it. Not all of us dine off silver platters. I haven't lived off of financial aid ever in my life, but I entirely agree with it for students to an extent. I don't like people who mooch off of the system for extended lengths of time. I believe they should get jobs, but sometimes you need a helping hand and getting rid of that is ridiculous.

Thank you Jon for writing this article. This is a prime example of the problem with liberals! They're such HUGE HYPOCRITES. First, they claim that the theory of natural selection is in force and brought humanity to where it is today. THEN, they try to put in artificial means of ending natural selection. If there was NO welfare, whether for students, poor people, minorities, or the elderly, natural selection would run free. Forget not being able to goto school, half of these people wouldn't be able to live. Then, that leaves more space for the rest of us. Instead of trying to schedule group meetings around some idiot who has to work an additional 32 hours a week while going to school, meetings can occur whenever we want - preferably after getting the BMWs our parent's bought us, to replace the mercedes we got as a middle school graduation present, washed. And they wonder why Kerry is a flip-flopperer.

It tells me that the more conservative you are, the more likely you are to be retarded. I didn't need a poll to tell me that.

Is this a joke?
No, really. I'm not kidding. Yes I am a college student, yes I recieve financial aid, and yes I work my ass off everyday so that I can be more educated and think for myself. Okay so you want to stereotype that liberal? Why though? Do you ever stop to think about the words you throw around? What does it mean to be liberal, or conservative? F.Y.I., people aren't so black and white, in fact most if not all live in the gray areas based on experience and opinions. So don't go and stereotype all college kids receiving aid as being free-loaders because you obviously have some built up angst against people learning, and thinking for themselves.
